RES was recently contacted by a large North Texas hospital concerned with the unrelenting heat this summer.
While their chiller plant was fully operational, the soaring temperatures were placing a strain on their systems. The hospital facility managers opted to be pro-active and source a reliable contingency plan for a backup chiller.
This quick-thinking customer studied the sultry forecasts, analyzed its plant’s behavior in the heat, and concluded a backup chiller would allow them to stay open for business if the worst should occur.
Because of their foresight, RES was able to provide an appropriately sized air-cooled chiller. We delivered and installed the equipment during normal working hours, thus considerably reducing cost, stress on the hospital staff and their patients. And the hospital solved a problem before it occurred.
“What happens if we lose our air conditioning”?
Chilled water plants for facilities such as this one rely on a chilled water temperature between 42 and 45 degrees to maintain cooling and humidity control. As ambient temps rise and remain high even at night, a chilled water plant may often be running at full capacity. Engineers design for the hottest of days, so plants are not often undersized. But increased and sustained loads on a building, coupled with some loss of capacity due to age and condition of equipment, may allow supply chilled water temperatures to creep into the fifties. While still relatively cold, water over 50 degrees is warmer than what is designed for the air handlers and coils, and the heat cannot be removed from the building as it was originally designed. Interior temps rise, humidity levels rise, and the cool comfortable air-conditioned space is soon no longer so comfortable.
Redundant, or backup chillers, may be piped into the existing chilled water piping to add additional cooling as needed. Or they may be connected “just in case” a piece of equipment fails. Answering the question “What happens if we lose our air conditioning”? may illuminate some very important points for a facility. Some businesses would have to shut down, others would lose production. These are not often acceptable outcomes. In the case of a hospital, it cannot shut down. It must remain open to serve the community, under all conditions.
